A century of worker and cooperative history accessible to all!
Coming from a workers' circle created in Saint-Claude at the end of the 1870s, then transformed into a food cooperative in 1881, La Fraternelle stood out radically by providing for the full transfer of profits to a social fund allowing the establishment of welfare, relief, retirement and mutual aid services with other cooperatives. A whole philosophy, a social, political and union culture is then put in place. And what could be better than bringing together the different activities under one roof? Like the “Vooruit” in Belgium, the Sanclaudian cooperators bought a building in the heart of the city and built the Maison du Peuple which was inaugurated in 1910.
Heir to a realized utopia, the La Fraternelle association has been reviving this 30 m4000 building for 2 years. Today, it is a cultural and artistic space, a place of memory, dissemination and contemporary creation located in the heart of the city and Haut-Jura: café, cinema, theater/dance, music, screen printing workshop, art library , archives, shop...
